Apple & Blackberry Oat Crumble

Sweet apples and juicy blackberries are topped with a golden oat crumble and a hint of cinnamon. The is a great comforting family favourite with lovely textures. It's ideal as a sweet treat to serve on special occasions or at the weekend with low fat custard.

Filling
  • 1 kg Braeburn apples, peeled and chopped into 2 cm chunks
  • 2 tbsp table-top sweetener, suitable for baking
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 50 ml water
  • 150 g blackberries, halved
Crumble
  • 60 g porridge oats
  • 120 g plain wholemeal flour
  • 1 tbsp table-top sweetener
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 40 g light soft brown sugar
  • 75 g reduced-fat vegetable spread

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C / 180°C Fan / Gas 6.
  2. Prepare the apples. Place the apples, sweetener, cinnamon and water in a saucepan over a medium heat, cover and cook until the apples are soft enough to crush with a spoon, remove from the heat and leave to cool.
  3. Prepare the crumble. Meanwhile, combine the porridge oats and flour in a bowl, then stir in the sweetener, cinnamon and sugar. Add the spread and rub into the mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  4. Assemble & bake
    Transfer the apple mixture to an ovenproof dish, stir in the blackberries, then scatter over the crumble topping.
    Bake for 25 minutes until golden and crisp on top.

SMART notes & tips

  • Don't have blackberries? Try raspberries, plums or frozen mixed berries instead.
  • We've given this recipe a healthier twist, but it will still contribute a fair amount of sugar and saturated fat. Enjoy every mouthful, stick to the recommended portion size and save it for occasional treats or special occasions.
