Cholesterol SMART® Living is HEART UK’s recipe-led lifestyle service. It brings together heart-healthy recipes, trusted Cholesterol SMART® guidance and practical tools to help make planning, shopping and cooking easier. Cholesterol SMART® Living is provided by HEART UK Trading Company Limited, a wholly owned trading subsidiary of HEART UK. Profits generated are paid to HEART UK to support its charitable work. Your subscription contract is with HEART UK Trading Company Limited.
You can browse the website and view free recipes without an account. An account and an active Premium subscription are required to access Premium recipes and subscriber tools such as step-by-step guided cooking mode, favourites, collections, meal planning tools and shopping lists.
Visit the Recipes page to browse the full recipe archive. You can search for a particular dish or ingredient, or use the filters to narrow the recipes to suit your preferences.
There are a number of ways to search and filter recipes. Use the search box to look for a particular recipe or ingredient. You can also use the blue filter function at the top right of the recipes page. This allows you to filter by diet preference (flexitarian, pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan), as well as a range of other options including dietary goals such as high protein, fibre, calories per serving, preparation and cooking time, cuisine and meal occasion. You can select multiple filters to narrow your results. Or use the quick filter buttons below the search box for some of our most popular searches, Quick & Easy, Vegetarian, Soup, Family Favourites and Curries.
Premium recipes are clearly identified by a red ‘PREMIUM’ banner on the recipe image. Recipes without this banner are free to access. Everyone can view the introduction to a Premium recipe, but the full recipe content and tools are only available when you are signed in with an active Premium subscription.
Every recipe is developed around Cholesterol SMART® principles and reviewed by HEART UK's nutrition and dietetic team. Our recipes focus on healthier fats, fibre-rich foods, more plant proteins and balanced meals, using practical everyday ingredients without compromising on flavour.
The majority of our recipes have a heart-healthy nutritional profile, with almost all savoury recipes being low in saturated fat, many providing heart-healthy fats and moderate to low in salt. For our sweet treats, we’ve worked hard to improve the nutritional profile compared with more traditional versions without compromising on flavour and texture. However, by their nature, sweet treats will still provide higher than ideal amounts of sugars, fats and/or calories. Sweet treats can be included as part of a heart-healthy diet – food is also about enjoyment, fun and celebration – but they are best enjoyed less frequently and on special occasions.
Nutritional information is calculated using validated recipe-analysis software and is shown as a guide. Values are based on average UK ingredients, the quantities and cooking methods stated, and the listed number of servings. Actual values may vary according to the brands, ingredients and serving sizes you use.
Yes. The nutritional information includes any accompaniments included within the ingredients list, such as side salads, rolls or dips.
Nutrition Highlights help you quickly identify some of the key nutritional features of a recipe, such as whether it's low in saturated fat, provides heart-healthy fats, omega-3, fibre or plant protein, and how many portions of your 5-a-day it provides.
Diet information is provided to help you make informed choices, but we cannot guarantee that a recipe is suitable for every allergy or intolerance. Always check product labels and consider possible cross-contamination. Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional if you have specific medical or dietary needs.
No. The recipes and other content provide general information and are not a substitute for personalised medical or dietary advice. Speak to a qualified healthcare professional if you need advice about a health condition, allergy or therapeutic diet.
All our recipes provide standard serving sizes, but only Premium subscribers can change the number of servings. Changing the number of servings on the recipe page automatically adjusts the displayed ingredient quantities. Check that the revised quantities and cooking arrangements are appropriate before you begin.
For Premium subscribers, selecting Start Cooking opens Cooking Mode. This takes you through the recipe method one step at a time and shows the ingredients needed for each individual step, making it easier to follow the recipe as you cook. Premium subscribers can also choose to keep their screen awake while cooking.
Timers are available to everyone. Where a cooking time is underlined in the method, simply select it to start the timer.
Sign in to your Premium account. On the recipe page you want to favourite, select the heart-shaped icon with the text ‘Save’ next to it, immediately above Ingredients. The recipe will automatically appear in the My Favourites tab in My Account. To remove the recipe from My Favourites on the recipe page, select the heart-shape icon where you can remove it, or remove it directly from My Favourites in My Account. For more information on how to use favourites watch our video in the help section.
Collections let Premium subscribers organise recipes into useful groups, such as weekday meals, family favourites or recipes to try. You can create and manage collections from My Account or add a recipe while viewing it. For more information on how to use recipe collections watch our video in the help section.
Premium feature. In My Account, Premium subscribers can generate a shopping list from recipes in a specific collection. The list can be reviewed, adjusted, checked off while shopping and printed. Refresh the list after changing the recipes or servings in a collection. For a step-by-step guide on how to create, edit and print a shopping list watch our video in the help section.
Premium feature. Make sure you are signed into your Premium My Account. As a Premium subscriber, you can add your own private notes to a recipe, such as reminders, changes you’ve made or personal adjustments. Your notes are associated with your account and are visible only to you.
Premium feature. At the bottom of each recipe page, Premium Subscribers can add a rating and/or review. Ratings & reviews may be held for moderation before they appear publicly.
Free recipes can be printed for personal use or shared using the options on the recipe page. Premium subscribers can also print or save Premium recipes as a PDF. All content is for personal use only and must not be copied, redistributed or used commercially.
Premium includes access to the full recipe collection and subscriber tools such as favourites, collections, meal-planning features, shopping lists and other account-based recipe tools. Subscribers also receive regular recipe emails as part of the service. Find out more about Premium.
Premium is currently available for £2.99 per month or £29.90 per year. The latest price and billing frequency are always shown on the Premium page and again at checkout before you confirm.
Plan changes are not available during the initial free trial, as this could affect your trial. If you'd like to switch plans during your free trial, you can either:
Your payment details allow the subscription to continue without interruption if you decide to remain a subscriber after the trial. Payments are processed securely by Stripe, and Cholesterol SMART® Living does not store your full card details.
No. The 7-day free trial is available once per person. If you have previously used a trial, restarting Premium will begin as a paid subscription without another free-trial period.
Go to My Account, open My Subscription and select Cancel subscription. Cancelling stops the subscription from renewing, but your Premium access normally continues until the trial ends. To avoid being charged, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial is due to convert to a paid subscription.
Yes. We'll send you a reminder before your free trial ends, giving you time to cancel if you don't want to continue. Once your paid subscription begins, we'll also email you before each monthly payment or annual renewal.
When you subscribe, you'll get immediate access to Premium recipes and features. This means the normal 14-day cooling-off period for online purchases no longer applies once your access begins. That's why we ask you to confirm this when you subscribe.
Go to My Account, open My Subscription and select Cancel subscription. Your subscription will not renew again, but you will retain Premium access until the end of the billing period you have already paid for.
Cancelling ends Premium access at the end of the relevant trial or paid billing period; it does not delete your website account. You can continue to sign in and use any free features that are available.
Yes. Sign in using your existing account and visit the Premium page to choose a plan. If you have already used a free trial, payment will be due when you restart and a second trial will not be applied.
Paid subscribers can request a change from monthly to annual or from annual to monthly through Subscription in My Account. The current plan remains active until the end of its billing period, and the new plan begins on the date shown during the change process.
Plan changes are not available during the initial free trial. This avoids ending or altering the trial unexpectedly. Once the trial has converted to a paid subscription, you can request a change from the Subscription in My Account area.
The My Subscription area will show an upcoming plan change and its effective date. Contact us as soon as possible if you have scheduled a change in error or need help before it takes effect.
Refunds are provided where required by law, including where digital content is faulty, not fit for purpose or not as described. Refunds are not normally provided for unused subscription time or because a subscription was not cancelled before renewal. Please see the Terms and Conditions or contact us at [email protected] if you believe there has been an error.
If we change the price of your subscription, we'll let you know before the new price takes effect. You'll have the option to cancel your subscription before the change applies.
